WEEK 15- Asking for God's Blessing

MONDAY — Read the passage with your team.

 1 May God be gracious to us and bless us
       and make his face shine upon us,

 2 that your ways may be known on earth,
       your salvation among all nations.

 3 May the peoples praise you, O God;
       may all the peoples praise you.

 4 May the nations be glad and sing for joy,
       for you rule the peoples justly
       and guide the nations of the earth.

 5 May the peoples praise you, O God;
       may all the peoples praise you.

 6 Then the land will yield its harvest,
       and God, our God, will bless us.

 7 God will bless us,
       and all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Psalm 67

What does this passage have to say about humility?

Why is that important?

TUESDAY — Discuss the passage with your team.

1) Now that you’ve come to the end of your season and your study on humility, how would you (in a phrase or two) describe humility?

2) What does this psalm acknowledge, which is so foreign to our sinful nature and the ways of the world?  To whom is credit given?

WEDNESDAY — Discuss the passage with your team.

3) What are the blessings reaped by a humble person who asks for God’s grace, and who acknowledges God for all the good things he has received (v. 4, 6)?  Do you give praise to God for your athletic gifts and successes?  Does your team do so?  Specifically...how?  Can you be more intentional in doing so?

4) Has your season been marked by gladness, joy, and a “good harvest”?  If you’ve not experienced this blessing, what may you have failed to do?  If that is the case, can you do that together today...now?

THURSDAY — Discuss the passage with your team.

5) What is the purpose in asking for God’s blessing (v. 2, 3, 7)?  Is it only for our own benefit (to “make his face shine upon us”), or is something else that we should desire?

6) Do you really care if others know Christ?  Do you really care if His ways are known “among all nations” and if “all the ends of the earth” fear Him?  Why should you care about this? (“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins...but because of His great love for us, God...made us alive in Christ — it is by grace you have been saved.” - Ephesians 2:1, 4a, 5 — and — “We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our lives as well, because you have become so dear to us.” - 1 Thessalonians 2:8)  What are you doing to share the love of Christ with others?  What opportunities does your team have to share the love of Christ with others?  What have you done with those opportunities?

FRIDAY — Discuss sport applications of humility, and pray together.

· Ask your athletes to briefly reflect on what they’ve learned about humility this week, and to repeat some of those things.  (Remind them of some of the Biblical truths about humility you’ve discussed, if necessary.)

· Ask your team, “Based on what we learned about humility this week...What does a humble athlete do?”  Do not settle for vague answers; challenge your athletes to go beyond general qualities of a humble athlete, and to determine what those qualities look like in action.

· Add the results to your team’s list of descriptions of the “humble athlete”, and be sure the list is displayed somewhere that is constantly visible, as a reminder to the team.

· Pray together as a team.  Encourage your athletes to pray for your team’s growth in regard to the discipline of humility — especially in relation to some of the issues and challenges that you discussed together this week.  Challenge them to also ask for forgiveness, when applicable.  Give time for athletes to request prayer (regarding humility or anything else), and pray together.
