NCSAA Great Lakes Classic - Day 1
By Nate Hartman
September 10, 2009The first day of this year's Great Lakes Classic is complete, which means the boys' soccer divisions are set for Day Two, and the girls' soccer pool play leaders have emerged. Highlights of Thursday included:
- Dave Sekura's excellent challenge at the Soccer Opening Program -- encouraging the athletes to desire that even the "corners" of their lives honor Jesus Christ. Please pray with us that the athletes and teams at this week's event will make a commitment to compete (this week and throughout their seasons) in a way that prioritizes a relationship with our Lord ahead of all other goals.
- An early upset in the girls' soccer pool play -- Bluegrass United (KY) over defending champion Grace Brethren Christian (MD). Girls' soccer pool play continues on Friday, including the first games for two teams who have not yet played -- Northumberland Christian (PA) and Cornerstone Christian (OH). By Friday night, the girls' soccer matchup games (for the championship game, third-place game, and fifth-place game) will be set.
- Two very exciting boys' varsity afternoon games -- Landmark (OH) defeating defending boys' champion Beaver County Christian (OH) in overtime (5-4), and Lakeland Christian (IN) edging Eden Christian (PA) by a score of 3-2. The boys' Division 1 semifinals (scheduled for 12:00 and 2:00 on Friday) will pit Lakeland against Bluegrass United (KY) and Landmark against Shenandoah Valley (VA).
Soccer play resumes at 10:00 AM on Friday, and girls' volleyball pool play begins on at 11:00 AM. We look forward to another day of excitement (and possibly some rain) on Friday! You may follow the tournament brackets (updated daily) here.
